Aguas Azules means Blue Waters in Spanish . . . and Aguas Negras means Black Waters. When arriving in the Dominican Republic as a tourist you will only see blue waters ~ but the inability to drink the water due to the probability of getting a water-borne illness and spending your vacation with intense cramping, pain, diarrhea, dehydration, and not wanting to move to get off the floor is just a hint of the deeper problems faced by local, poor Dominicans. I visited and experienced seeing beautiful, blue, ocean waters and then seeing Aguas Negras, a barrio (slum) in the Dominican Republic named for its dirty water. This image is two merged – the one on the left is a view from the plane of the coast of the Dominican – the view that most tourists see – never knowing the view on the right; the reality the poor people of the Dominican are faced with every day.
